The McLaren 12C has a trick Formula 1 banned

Here's something to chew on while you wait on your car repair: the McLaren 12C uses a system its Formula 1 team ran in the late 1990s until the rule makers banned it. McLaren calls it Brake Steer. When you turn in a little too hot, it gently brakes the inside rear wheel to pull the nose back onto your line, and on the way out of a corner it stops that inside wheel from spinning away your power. McLaren says it does the job of a torque-vectoring differential while weighing up to 20 kg less. On the road it's legal. On the F1 grid it's contraband. That's a great reason to own one.

The first 'pure McLaren'

The 12C, first called the MP4-12C, made its public debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2010 and went on sale in 2011. McLaren had built road cars before, like the legendary F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, but this was the start of McLaren Automotive as its own car company. Every part was designed for this car. McLaren's line was that nothing was carried over "because they were not good enough."

A whole car built around one carbon tub

The center of the 12C is the MonoCell, a one-piece carbon fiber chassis that weighs 75 kg (165 lb). McLaren says the carbon chassis of the original F1 took thousands of hours to make; the 12C's MonoCell comes out of the mold in about four hours. That's how a carbon chassis went from hypercar money to "only" supercar money.

The Airbrake

Stand on the brakes above about 95 km/h (59 mph) and the rear spoiler pops up to 32 degrees, then the air itself pushes it to 69 degrees. It adds drag and pushes the rear of the car down, so the 12C can lean on its rear brakes harder. It's like the car opening a parachute, except it's made of carbon and costs more than your first apartment.

Built for comfort too

There are no traditional anti-roll bars. Instead, McLaren's ProActive Chassis Control links the dampers hydraulically, side to side and front to back. In a hard corner the car stays flat; on a bumpy straight it softens up. The Active Dynamics Panel has Normal, Sport and Track settings, plus a Winter mode, which is a phrase you don't usually see next to "supercar."

The McLaren 12C by the numbers

Day dreaming in winter

It's rear-wheel drive, so no "Winter-ready" tag on this card. If yours is tucked away warm in the garage until spring, good call. Our fleet is still out driving, and you can pick your dates.

Where to see a McLaren 12C

Noblesville Imports in Noblesville, Indiana, lists a 2012 McLaren MP4-12C with a sale price of $120,251 (shown on their site Oct 22, 2026, including their $251 doc fee). Tap the photo or the button to see it. Darin's photo above is a different 12C, black and rain-soaked, shot on one of his Lamborghini Miami trips. For scale: that's about half of what McLaren announced the 12C at in 2011. Depreciation is rough on the first owner and wonderful for daydreamers.

The honest part

Service, insurance and tire costs are pending until we find a source we trust. Our own rating is pending too.
